Ponta Delgada Things to Do

From historic architecture to exceptional natural beauty, there is so much to see and do in Ponta Delgada, Portugal. Here are some of the best things to do in this area of the Azores.

Azorean Gift Shop

When it comes to small gifts to take back home with you, the best spot is potentially in the airport. Its gifts include quality leather and handmade treasures. While you will pay a bit more here since it’s in the airport, it’s worth a stop if if you have any last minute shopping needs.

Church Up on the Hill

You don’t have to be religious in order to enjoy the beauty of this church. It overlooks all of Ponta Delgada, and its architecture is simple yet elegant at the same time. If you are a fan of historic architecture, religious or not, make sure to take in this building and the view.

The Three Arches

The three arches is a gateway into Ponta Delgada. The black and white paint is a beautiful contrast against the blue sky. It’s said that once you walk through the gates, you’ll never want to leave the town. That, of course, is up to you.

University Garden

This garden is a small yet eclectic collection of trees from around the world. Its flowers are bursting with life and adorn nearly every inch of the garden. If you want an easy walk with natural beauty all around you, this is the spot.

Todos Santos

This is the home of a former Jesuit college that has been converted into a church. It uses the familiar gray/black stone and white paint for an excellent affect. It truly matches the rest of the town and yet stands out as well. With architecture that is slightly more ornate than other areas of the city, make sure to stop by for at least a picture op.

Dolphin and Whale Watching Tours

Seeing these majestic creatures swimming in the water is truly incredible. Sometimes they will swim along the ship while other times you’ll need to keep an eye out for the whales coming up for air. Whether you’ve been on a dolphin or whale watching tour before, this is worth the time and money.
