As a big university city, Pisa is full of life. Its center is full of all sorts of meeting places including pubs, restaurants, pizzerias, inns, aperitif bars, discos and live music bars.
Walking Around Pisa at Night
Pisa is generally a safe place and a great town to take a walk in at night. You can take in the area more when the tour buses and crowds have gone. You don’t have to really worry too much about getting harassed or having your pockets picked, of course, it is always best to be careful.
What to Do
Pisa swarms with university students, and this means lots of pubs and cafes, lively ones during week nights. You’ll find the bars span the entire spectrum from quiet cafes to noisy clubs. Things to do:
- Visit the opera at the Theatro Verdi (dress smart casual)
- See live music at one of the clubs, you’ll find a variety of genres in town
- Dance all night and boogie to DJ music
- Stroll along the River Arno to Santa Maria della Spina – it’s perfectly lit and you’ll see more details of its great gothic facade than you do during daylight
Don’t miss the historic Caffé dell’Ussero, on Lungarno Pacinotti, which since 1794 has been the main meeting place of scholars in Pisa. Not up for too much? You can always just find a place to sit back, relax and sip on a cocktail or a glass of Chianti and mix with the locals.
What to Wear
Few, if any, of the bars and restaurants require any special dress. Come as you are and enjoy the atmosphere.
Nightlife in Pisa is a whole different way to see the city. The mood is vibrant but not in the least threatening. The backdrop of Pisa’s lovely old houses and palazzos with their lights reflected in the water make for a charming scene.
