Florence, Italy is a popular tourist destination, which can unfortunately make it a popular destination for pickpockets and other types of criminals. Knowing a little bit more about what to look for and avoid can help to ensure you have a safe and fun trip.
Like many other tourist destinations, pickpockets operate heavily throughout Florence. Some have even taken to dressing like tourists to blend in with the crowds. They often work in groups, and may have babies or children with them to appear less dangerous. Be cautious if someone appears to be acting overly friendly to you, as they may be causing a distraction so a partner can take your wallet, purse or other valuables while you aren't paying attention. If you see a large group of people or a commotion near a tourist site, avoid the area, as it may be a ruse to pickpocket those nearby.
As with pickpockets, purse snatchers often target tourists. If you do carry a purse, try to wear it across your body. Do not set a purse or bag down even if you feel comfortable in your surroundings, and avoid placing valuables in a backpack worn on your back. Keep your money in a money belt under your clothing if possible, and be aware of your surroundings.
Beware of beggars while traveling through Florence. They can sometimes be aggressive, even asking for more money once you've given them a few coins. Keep your distance, if possible, and avoid giving them any money to avoid prolonged interactions.
