Warnings and Dangers in Santa Monica: People / The Homeless

Santa Monica, like many U.S. cities, has it’s share of homelessness. Here are some warnings and dangers in Santa Monica about people / the homeless.

On the Beach

The most common place for running into homeless people is on the beach. Most are harmless, but you may encounter people with mental health issues who may be unnerving at times. Others may be alcoholics or substance abusers, which you may not wish to encounter. For the most part, these people are harmless and just trying to get by. You may be approached by panhandlers looking to beg money from you. You may see homeless people sleeping on the beach. If you do not wish to interact with them, do not approach them when possible. Most will leave you alone.

Keep Your Possessions Secure

Like any big city, Santa Monica has its share of thieves. Not all of them are homeless, but some are. Don’t tempt thieves with easy to steal possessions. Lock your bikes and keep your car doors locked ad your windows rolled up. Keep your purse close to you so that you won’t get it stolen.

Watch Out for Muggers

Mugging does happen in Santa Monica, which is why you should be very careful when you go there. Tourists have been killed in muggings in the past around the hotels near the beach, so be extra cautious at nighttime. Going in groups may or may not be a discouragement for muggers, so avoid any areas that look seedy or rundown.
