    Homeland Security has postponed the

    Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative

to June 1, 2009, at which point all American citizens will be required to present a passport at the Canadian and Mexican borders.

In 2007, passport agencies became backlogged by the overwhelming amount of applications when passports became a requirement for air travel into Canada and Mexico. The hope is that the 14-month advance notice will allow everyone to apply for passports before they're required.
