Parking in Chicago and other Warnings and Dangers

Warnings and Dangers in Chicago: Parking

Chicago is one of the most heavily populated cities in the United States and one of the most famously known cities in the world. Still, visitors to the area should be aware of certain warnings that will keep them out of danger.

General Tips for Parking

Chicago residents don’t like it when they find their spots taken for long periods of time. Keep in mind that residents pay a lot to live here, far more than in the suburbs, so visitors are encouraged to take a train. Also, unless you have no other choice, avoid driving to Cubs games. Parking ranges between $25 and $50. In some cases, they can be much higher. The streets also get heavily packed after the game. Finally, make sure you empty your car and leave no valuables in plain view anywhere you park in Chicago. Parking lot robberies, even after you’ve paid for access, are not uncommon.

Specific Areas of Town to Watch Out For

Downtown is a prime place to be ticketed if you’re not paying attention. You’ll notice parking meter attendants driving around on Segways, so make sure you’re paid up on your meter. Street parking is particularly difficult to find in and around Chinatown. You could pay at the official Chinatown lot, but it is expensive and there’s no guarantee there’ll be space. In a worst-case scenario, you might find your car towed. The cost of having it taken out of the impound lot will likely be a minimum of $150, so be careful.
