Paphos Things to Do
Just about anywhere you visit on the island nation of Cyprus is historic and picturesque; you can’t go wrong with any city you visit, including Paphos. When traveling to Paphos, here are a few of the top attractions and activities you need to consider.
The Harbor and the Castle of Paphos
You could spend your entire vacation just in the harbor area alone if you wanted to. The Castle of Paphos is located here. One part of the castle is now ruins, but most of it still stands. Located in the harbor itself, you can walk across a bridge to the structure, which was built following the collapse of the Roman Empire, the construction showcases a variety of historical artifacts inside. In the harbor you can also book a boat tour, pick up delicious seafood as you walk by the water or simply enjoy the sun and the sound of the water.
Kato Paphos Archeological Site
The Kato Paphos archeological sites date back to the time of the Roman Empire. Here you’ll find a collection of amazing artifacts, many of which are exceptionally maintained. There is an amphitheater where you can sit in the same seats Roman senators did over a thousand years ago. The mosaics around the site feature illustrations of wild animals, military victories, and designs. The Saranta Kolones Castle is located here, and while it is ruins, it can give you an idea of the grandeur and scope of Roman architecture. Many of the only remaining elements of the castle are archways, which also shows how strong the construction of the building’s bones was, and which architectural styles ancient civilizations utilized, and are still used today.
The House of Aion and the House of Theseus are also worth a visit. Each of these were constructed between the third and fifth century A.D. The wall paintings inside are some of the finest preserved ones you’ll see from this time period.
Old Town Paphos
Located further inland from the water, Old Town is full of local vendors selling produce and goods. The majority of the vendors sell to locals, which helps you land lower prices on food. You can also find some souvenirs sold here at better prices than the shops by the harbor.
Promenade
If you want a break from all the ruins in the area (there are a lot), check out the new Promenade. By the seafront, this new style of architecture takes a page from the past in its construction style. It also helps bring in the natural vegetation into the design as well. It juts out into the water, making it a fantastic location to take in the sun and the crashing waves.
