Moscow, Russia, has plenty of exciting and popular places to visit. But if you want to see the real Moscow, heading off the beaten path means greater adventure. Many places are accessible on a quick day trip, others require more time.

Day Trips from Moscow

About 70 miles northeast of Moscow and accessible by train is Sergiyev Posad. This city is home to Trinity Monastery of St Sergius Lavra with beautiful old-world style towers and cathedrals.

Dubrovitsy, a small town 25 miles away from Moscow, is home to a beautiful church different from the typical Russian Orthodox style churches. Accessible by train and bus you’ll also find a typical Russian-style home surrounded by stately gardens and a river. Climb the hill behind the church to view the Russian countryside. Built in the late 1600’s it’s surrounded by historic statues.

For a longer trip, Tula is home to the unmarked grave of Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy and 150 miles from Moscow.

Churches, Landmarks, and Museums

In Snegiri, about 30 miles from Moscow, lies a World War II landmark where the battle of Moscow occurred. The museum is surrounded by original war vehicles, tanks, and weapons left untouched.

For a literary adventure, Peredelkino, a small dacha settlement, was home to the poet and writer Boris Pasternak, Dr. Zhivago. Its historic museum is worth a visit and is accessible by train.
