For visitors who would love to see what the Hawaiian Island of Oahu has to offer besides the usual tourist traps, there are a number of attractions that can only be seen off the beaten path. From deep within the wilderness to the gorgeous Pacific beaches, Oahu is full of surprises.
Near Honolulu, you will find the Ko’oalu Range. To get to the top, you will need to follow the Wiliwili Nui trail. The hike starts off easy along a four lane highway. It quickly narrows down to a foot path into the Hawaiian wilderness. The last stretch of the hike is steep and can only be accomplished by using ropes. Once at the top, you will have an amazing view of the Windward side.
If Hawaii feels a little too hot, you might want to go for a quick hike to Maunawilli Falls, where you will be able to jump off the rocks into a small swimming hole. Beginners can take advantage of the 10 foot high jump, while experts can attempt the 50 foot jump.
Get two birds with one stone by visiting the Pu’u O Mahuka Heiau State Monument. A heiau is a Hawaiian temple and is very interesting to see. After that, follow the path on the right all the way to its end. There you'll find and overlook of Waimea Bay, where a lot of surfing competitions take place when the waves are big. A gorgeous spot.
Go swimming in any bay on Oahu, and you might notice the spinner dolphins. The trick to getting up close is to let them come to you. If you try to chase them, they will swim away. Just relax and they'll get curious.
