Town Centre – Downtown
Designed to look like an old-fashioned Nicosia neighborhood, the Town Centre in Downtown is a place to take a stroll and do some shopping. From Ledra Street (Odos Lidras) to the Central Market off Plateia Palaiou Dimarchiou you’ll find many gift shops, big-name department stores, and small boutiques to peruse and shop. The central market has local produce, fresh olives and feta cheese, dried herbs, and many other unique food items to enjoy.
A covered municipal market in North Nicosia, the Belediye Pazari, or “Bandabulya”, was the main market place during the Ottoman Empire. The shops here are full of cultural and unique items, but mostly you’ll find lots of meat and produce. However, it has less of a tourist vibe. The market is closed all day Sunday, but open Monday through Saturday. It is a great place to see local culture.
Surrounded by 16th century sturdy stone walls, the Ottomans thought fortifying the capital would keep the city from falling. The 11 bastions named after Venetian personalities fall into the Greek and Turkish zones.
