Located about halfways between the capital city of Albany and New York City is New Paltz, a major connecting point for commuters and travelers traveling around the State of New York. It is an attractive location for a weekend getaway for locals being of its scenic beauty combined with its accessibility. There are a lot of great attractions of things to do in the city and here some examples of them.
The Water Street Market
Just over the Wallkill bridge outside of the center of town is the Water Street Market, a collection of about 20 shops. These establishments range in style from restaurants to boutiques, to antique stores. Many people travel to the area just to shop at these stores. Stop in on a day with one of their great outdoor activities or festivals.
Take the Trails
The Wallkill Valley Trails are another major attraction in the area. They are appropriate whether you want to hike, bike, or run in the wilderness. You can even ride a horse on them. The trail is just over 12 miles long but can be a longer if you want to continue into town. It is also hilly enough to provide you with a lot of good exercise. There are spots on the trail where cars will cross the road, so be careful.
There are a number of apple orchards in the New Paltz area. Each fall, it becomes a major destination for tourists looking for a weekend getaway that involves apple picking, a true fall tradition in the Northeast. Two of the most popular orchards are Jenkins and Lukens orchards and the apple picking is usually the best during the month of September.
