Netherlands Shopping – Shops, Stores, Best Buys & Inside Tips

Netherlands Shopping Tips

Here are some tips on the best places to shop (and not) in Netherlands.

Amsterdam has lots to offer in its souvenir shops. You will find everything from wooden shoes (klompen), cheeses, windmills, Delft Blue ceramic items, souvenir t-shirts, towels and table cloths. Over the years, I have a nice little collection of real and fake Delft Blue items. Some of the shops near the flower market are cheaper than the souvenir shops at Damrak & Dam Square.

The so called “Koopgoot” is the more common name for what officially is called Beurstraverse. Litterly translated it means “Buying-gutter”. It’s a lower level in a big shoppingstreet that has a big amount of – mostly fashion- shops. The Koopgoot is opened 7 days a week, which makes Rotterdam together with Amsterdam the only two cities that have their shops open on sundays.

Some people make the mistake of staying in the big Hoog Catarijne shopping centre, an extension of the central station, for too long. Beyond the mall there’s a world of streets and alleys full of nice shops that sell just about anything you can imagine. And you want to get some real atmosphere too, don’t you? All you have to do is cross Hoog Catarijne and get out on the other side.

The Bergstraat Eindhoven is one of the three well-known shop streets of the so-called Quartier Vivant of Eindhoven, the district “The Bergen”. In this artistic heart of Eindhoven you can find galleries, small boutiques, the hippest fashion stores and restaurants. You’ll find some really interesting shops there, and a fantastic bookstore with some great books about art, architecture and travel.
