Nerja Things to Do
Nerja is a popular resort town in southern Spain, featuring beautiful beaches and a beautiful cavern, known as Cueva de Nerja, which hosts concerts in the summer. There’s also many historic sights, such as the Ermita de Las Angustias chapel and the Church of El Salvador.
Beaches
Nerja has eight beaches, some of which are small with sand and pebbles, while others are larger and have big stone walls that provide a cozy place to duck away from the sun during the warm summer months. Regardless of which beach you choose to visit, you’ll find many beach bars that serve refreshing drinks and tasty food. Some bars also offer barbecue all day, so you can enjoy some comfort food at almost any hour.
If you’re feeling adventurous, go for a daytime or nighttime scuba diving adventure to see the beauty of marine life. Scuba diving is offered at Playa Burriana, and the instructors focus on ensuring you learn how to properly dive, so you feel comfortable and at-ease while you’re underwater.
Historic Sights
The Nerja caves were discovered in the 1950s by a group of courageous boys who went exploring. You’ll see many breathtaking sights like paintings that are more than 20,000 years old and other historic remains. Only one-third of the caves are open to the public, as scientists are still studying them. Even with two-thirds of the caves marked off-limits, it takes about 45-60 minutes to visit all the open areas. During the summer months, one of the caverns is used as a concert hall for music and other performances.
Slightly out of the way of other attractions, Ermita y Santuario de Nuestra Senora de las Angustias is a small, intimate chapel with multiple murals. The Baroque-style chapel also contains some elegant paintings.
Located between Paseo del Balcón de Europa and Plaza Cavana, the Church of El Salvador is probably the oldest building that you can visit in the city. This church contains many large ceramic plaques outside that detail the history of the church. Once you venture inside, there’s life-size sculptures of the Virgin Mary and Christ, dressed in real clothes.
