Mystic Things to Do
Mystic, Connecticut has been a center of maritime activities since the 18th century. From the harbor dotted with old whaling ships to the aquarium, there is plenty to do in this classic New England village.
Old Mystic
This part of the original village of Mystic is a great place to come if you enjoy nautical and maritime history. Wander the streets lined with homes previously occupied by whaling captains. Here is where you’ll find the Museum of america and the Sea It has a recreated 19th century sea village, historical ships, and many exhibits with artifacts collected over the centuries. A permanent exhibit called “The Voyages” tells stories of America’s seafaring past and present. The DuPont Preservation Ship Yard, a working facility that completed the preservation on the world’s last wooden whaling ship, the Charles W. Morgan. The current restoration project is on the Mayflower II. Four of the vessels, the Morgan, the Dunton, the Sabino, and the Emma C. Berry, are designated as National Historic Landmarks.
The museum also has a planetarium, educational activities, and a summer camp program. Workshops are available on knot tying, navigation and other maritime trades. It’s a great place to learn about New England’s maritime heritage and has programs for all ages.
Mystic Aquarium and Institute for Exploration
The aquarium has a variety of exhibits and hand-on experiences. Beluga whales, African penguins, stingrays, sharks, jelly fish and sea lions are just some of the animals on display. You can also feed some of the animals. There are also touch pools with small sharks, crabs and even a stingray.This is a perfect way to combine an interactive educational experience while creating lasting memories.
Sailing on the Mystic River
Experience Mystic in a new way by taking a cruise down the Mystic River. Choose from schooners, steamers, or tall ships for an exciting adventure as you sail under the Mystic River drawbridge.
While you are visiting Mystic you can also take a carriage ride though the town, visit the local casinos, or enjoy the sunsets during happy hour on the river. Don’t forget to have a slice of the famous Mystic Pizza!
