Mumbai Travel Guide
Traveling to one of the largest cities in India (and the world itself) may seem a bit overwhelming. With so much to see and so many people in the vicinity, planning a trip to Mumbai requires a bit more thought than a typical vacation to a beach city.
Hotels
The top-rated hotel in Mumbai, the Taj Mahal Palace Tower, features all the amenities that a modern traveler requires, ranging from an indoor pool to a business center to room service. Since it’s located at the very heart of the city’s peninsula, the cost may surprise you: a stay may cost less than $100 per night if you book early enough.
Things To See
By far the most popular tourist destination in Mumbai is the Gateway of India, the huge center of the port where the very first trade originated in the city centuries ago. Not only are the buildings fantastic, dating back to the colonial period, but the view of the bay can’t be beat.
Safety
Like most parts of India, the water in Mumbai is not safe to drink directly from faucets. Instead, purchase bottled water to use to drink and brush your teeth. Do not order drinks with ice. While the city itself is safe for visitors, the most common crime is purse-snatching, sometimes done from motorcycle. Women should consider leaving their purses at home, if possible, and putting their money and passport into a traveler’s wallet rather than carrying it in a bag.
The Gateway of India
Overlooking the Arabian Sea, this massive, ornate monument was built between 1911 and 1924 and is a great way to take in culture, beautiful construction, and India’s history all at once. Though it was built to commemorate the visit of British monarchs, the gateway is also a symbol of the country’s independence as the last British troops occupying India “exited” through the gateway in a 1948 ceremony.
Mumbai Markets
Exploring Mumbai’s bazaars is a fascinating experience all its own, and it’s also a wonderful way to pick up both souvenirs and necessities on the cheap. Though there are many markets, some favorites among travelers are Chor Bazaar, Zaveri Bazaar, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai (also known as Crawford Market), and Colaba Causeway. Book lovers will also want to check out Flora Fountains.
The Taj Mahal Palace (Hotel)
Modeled after the mausoleum of the same name, the Taj Mahal Palace is one of the fanciest hotels in Mumbai and has hosted celebrities and political leaders from all over the world. Even if you’re not staying here, it’s worth a stop. In operation since 1903, the hotel is a beautiful example of architecture from different eras complementing each other. It’s also home to multiple restaurants and a spa.
Kala Ghoda
This is Mumbai’s art precinct and cultural center, and it’s a great way to pick up some local art or just get to know the city on a more personal level. Stroll around and visit its many galleries, museums, art shows, and festivals.
