Fort Osage

The first European settlers to make their way through Missouri were French fur traders, who built Fort Osage as an outpost. It still stands today and looks much the same as it did when it was in use. Just an hour outside of Kansas City, this makes a good day trip. Note that the fort is only open Wednesday through Sunday

Powell Gardens

Another fun outdoor adventure located just outside of Kansas City is Powell Gardens. It is just under an hour outside of the city and is a serene place to relax, thanks to its multiple walking paths, flower beds, ponds, and streams. Thousands of people visit the gardens each year to take a break from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Platte City, Missouri

For those with interest in the history of Missouri’s government, Platte City offers the Platte County Museum, which is an exact replica of the governor’s mansion located Jefferson City. The museum is only open on weekdays.

Watkins Mill State Park

Watkins Mill State Park has some of the most beautiful grounds in the state of Missouri and is a popular camping spot with over 60 campsites available. The scenery is top-notch and the hiking and biking trails are not too difficult.

Independence, Missouri

Independence, Missouri is a suburb of Kansas City with a lot to do. You can take a tour of Harry Truman’s home, visit the Bingham Waggoner Estate, or go for a hike at the National Frontier Trails. It is also a major center for the Church of Latter Day Saints and there is a temple there for the LDS religion.
