Mijas Things to Do
Mijas is a town on the southern coast of Spain. While in Mijas, take in the views of El Compas, shop in the city center, and visit medieval churches and statues.
El Compas
El Compas is one of the highest points in Mijas. On a clear day some say you can see Africa. At the very least, you should get unrivaled views of Mijas Costa, Fuengirolas, Torremolinos, Marbella, and many other towns and cities in the region.
Shop
In the Main Square, you can see monuments, fountains, and shop at the many stores, restaurants, and souvenir shops. On La Cala de Mijas, near the beach, you can find outdoor markets. Gathering most Wednesdays and Saturdays, vendors sell nuts, fruit, purses, clothes, shoes, and much more.
Churches, Statues, and Fortess Ruins
Mijas, like many old towns in Spain, is filled with historic churches and statues. San Sebastian Church, Iglesia de Immaculate Conception, Ermita de la Virgende la Pena, and Virgin of the Rock Shrine, are just a few of the spots worth checking out while in town.
From the 8th century to 1487, a Moorish castle defended Mijas. Near the end of the 15th century, Christians overtook the city and pushed to Moors out. Parts of the castle remain and are open to the public. The castle ruins offer a glimpse into Spain’s turbulent history.
