Midwestern Bed and Breakfasts have long been characterized by rooms decorated in the classic “country” style. Step into most B & B’s and you’ll find the requisite gingham goose door stop, plaid window valance, and the pseudo antique quilt on the bed. Unfortunately, this characterization holds true in most cases. However, there is a gem of a B & B that is smack dab in the middle of the country, that transcends this stereotype. Circle S Ranch, outside of Lawrence, Kansas is a spectacular example of rustic chic.
The interior is beautifully designed by the owners, and is a showcase rustic elements paired with rich leather furniture. Each guest room has a decorating “theme”, but doesn’t feel contrived or draw on “cheesy” pun-induced ideas. Beautiful handcrafted furniture and hand- forged wrought iron hardware defines this “inn’s” attention to detail. There are three floors which allow both individual and group accommodations. The upper level rooms have gas fireplaces and most rooms have a sitting area. There are also meeting spaces and common areas for group gatherings. Included in your stay is a fabulous gourmet breakfast that won’t disappoint.
The grounds offer a multitude of hiking and horseback riding trails, a “party barn” for large group activities, and a fishing pond. The bustling college community of Lawrence, home to the Kansas Jayhawks, is a quick 20 minute drive away. Downtown Lawrence offers boutique shopping, cutting-edge restaurants, and antique shops.
The best part about the Circle S Ranch is the peacefulness. The only sounds are the rustling of the wheat and the cattle that graze near the inn. The ranch is a “working ranch”, so you can always pitch-in and then soak your bones in the hot tub (conveniently located in the old silo!).
