Mellieha Things To Do
A large village in northern Malta and a popular summer destination for its lovely beaches.
Mellieha Bay and Beaches
Mellieha Bay is an easy stroll down the slopes of the village to the bay. Here, bright blue waters and warm sand make this one of the most popular beaches in Malta. You can spend an entire day walking in the shallow waters. Rent an umbrella to keep out the sun and a chair to sit on. Behind the beach are vendors selling cold drinks and warm lunches. Keep in mind it gets very crowded during the summer so come here as early as possible to get a good spot.
Malta’s largest inhabited village, Mellieha Village has many small side streets that will lead you up a hill for fine views across the entire area. Cafes and restaurants make the ideal place to head as the sun goes down.
In Anchor Bay, you’ll find the set where the live-action Popeye movie was filmed turned into a theme park where you can see the museums., catch a live show, or ride the rides. You can even take a boat ride that gives you a great perspective of the village for a good photograph.
Ghadira Nature Reserve
This preserve is a rest stop for dozens of species of migrating birds. Grab your binoculars and be prepared to spot over a hundred types of birds at any given time. The preserve offers trails you can follow along the shore where you’ll also see other animal life including bunnies and chameleons.
Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mellieha
Originally a natural cave, this is now a church and a museum. Head inside to see painted grottos, medieval art and a working church. The chapel is said to contain a painting that was created in the year 60 A.D. depicting St. Luke.
