Marmaris Travel Guide
A gorgeous port and beach town on the shores of Turkey, Marmaris is home to resorts and outdoor tourist activities popular all summer long. Here’s travel guide tips from people who’ve lived in or visited Marmaris.
Top Places to Stay
Marmaris is full of hotels, resorts, and apartments for every budget. Four of the most popular places to stay are Club Likya Apartments, Club Aida, Hotel Aqua, and Cettia Apart Hotel. Different places to stay cater towards families, couples, singles, and older adults.
Top Things to Do
The Marmaris Castle is the most popular tourist attraction in Marmaris. Built in the 1500s by the Ottoman Empire, you can now visit the museum, courtyard, and enjoy a scenic walk.
Sitting at the beach remains extremely popular during the hot summer months. Many visitors prefer the Icmeler Beach, which is less crowded than Marmaris beach. You can also go on fishing expeditions and do other outdoor activities.
There are many markets in town. The Grand Bazaar in the center of town has over 1000 shops and a great place to buy unique local wares.
For a day of relaxation, visit one of the many Turkish baths.
Local Customs
Marmaris has a rich cultural heritage. One common tradition visitors notice immediately is the importance of prayer time, with locals praying up to five times per day.
Locals in Marmaris also make delicious cuisine. Traditionally made by women, foods you’ll want to try include the ice cream, apple tea, and local beer.
Transportation Advice
The Dolmus mini-busses are easy to use and inexpensive. You can tell which route they’re taking by the color of the bus. To take one, flag the driver and state your stop. You can pay when you get on or off.
You can also take water taxis, catamarans, and boats. These are especially useful when going longer distances, like a side trip to Greece.
To get to sites not on public transportation routes, take a taxi or rent a car.
What to Pack
Bring clothes for hot summer weather and water and beach gear. A hat and sunscreen are essential. Pack medicine as it’s expensive in Marmaris.
