The Old Town

Narrow streets and whitewashed houses make this well worth exploring. Stop off at the Pateo de los Naranjos, or orange plaza, and dip your fingers in the fountain. Next, step inside the old Christian building, known as the Ermita del Santo Cristo, on la Plaza del Santo Cristo. This area is partially surrounded by thick Moorish walls that hint at the city’s many-layered history. Admire the town hall. It dates from the time of King Ferdinand of Ferdinand and Isabella fame.

Puerto Banus

For a glimpse at the area’s wealthy, check out the Puerto Banus. This port area can have dozens of large yachts anchored at any one time. This is where you go for nightlife and clubs.

The Beaches

More than half a dozen beaches welcome guests. Fontanilla Beach is centrally located near the tourist office. For a smaller, more secluded beach, check out Faro Beach. It faces the lighthouse so it’s easy to find. Venus Beach is another centrally located beach. Locals consider it one of the most beautiful beaches in entire Costa del Sol, with warm sands and inviting waters.

Funny Beach is the place to take the kids. It has many activities, including jet skiing and go-karting. Check out the Avenida del Mar right next to these beaches. It has a promenade and a series of sculptures designed by Dali. A long path about fifteen kilometers connects all the beaches and the seafront. This is an ideal place for a stroll late at night. Skaters and bikers are welcome. Another good place for a walk is the Paseo de la Alameda. There’s a fountain, shady trees, and lots of Moorish style benches. Come here during the evening to watch the sun go down. Check out La Alameda for an ideal retreat from the heat, as it has lots of native flowers and plants.

Jazz Festivals and Day Excursions

Marbella is home to one of the most important jazz festivals in Europe. You can see dozens of performances here each year. Double check dates, as they can change from year to year. Marbella also makes an ideal starting point for a tour of many other places in the region. You can easily get a boat to set foot in Morocco for the day trip of a lifetime. Another popular place is the nearby elegant hill town of Ronda. Explore ancient avenues and cross three high bridges for a bird’s eye view of the entire coast.
