Maputo Transportation – Taxi, Train, Bus & Airport Tips

Maputo, Mozambique is a gorgeous seaside city filled with Mediterranean architecture and a relaxed atmosphere. When you visit this capital city, get around to all the attractions with a variety of transportation options.

Air Transportation in Maputo

You have one major airport serving the Maputo area: Maputo International Airport (MPM). An hour’s flight will get you between Maputo and South Africa, and this is most likely also where you’ll fly in at for your visit.

Maputo Trains

The Maputo Train Station connects you to South Africa and Johannesburg, so you can hop on the Shongololo Express and enjoy a relaxing and scenic ride to move from city to city.

Maputo Ferry

Want some time out on Delagoa Bay? A ferry runs between the city and Catembe, where you can get delicious fresh seafood prepared Portuguese style.

Maputo Taxis

Taxis are available in most of the tourist-heavy areas, such as at hotels. The service costs between $3 and $7, depending on how far you’re going. You can also get in a Laranijnhas, which is a scooter taxi covered with an orange shell. These taxis are only available at Hotel Cardoso.

Maputo Buses

Full-size buses are available in the Baixa and Museu areas of the city, but you’re more likely to get on the chapas, which are minibusses. These are vans that take you around to most areas of the city. The typical trip costs $0.25, but you’re often squeezed into these vehicles.

Maputo Rental Cars

You have access to a fairly extensive highway system around Maputo and several car rental companies are available. Gasoline pricing is approximately $3.50 per gallon. If you want to take an East Africa road trip, these prices are definitely friendly to your plans.
