Recent incidents such as the disappearance of a man from a Royal Caribbean ship, the fire on the Star Princess, and the deaths of Celebrity passengers in Chile have some people concerned about the safety of cruising. In some cases, however, cruise-related accidents are cases of idividuals’ irresponsibility and not the cruise lines’ fault.
The latest onboard tragedy again involves a man disappearing from a Royal Caribbean ship. According to the Associated Press, the friends of 21-year-old Daniel DiPiero reported him missing from their Bahamas cruise on Monday. The ship’s security cameras revealed that he fell overboard around 2:00 a.m.
According to investigators, DiPiero and his friends smuggled a bottle of rum onboard the ship and concealed more alcohol in mouthwash bottles. Bringing alcohol onboard is against cruise line policies. The men reportedly drank Sunday afternoon, and DiPiero continued drinking until midnight.
