Shop local markets, modern malls, or go island hopping to find better prices and unique gifts at souvenir and specialty shops on the Maldives.
The best souvenier shopping is the mobile local market. It's set up at Club Med every Saturday at 5:00 p.m. Prices here are much lower than at their counterpart in the Seychelles. Agora is a modern shopping center in Male. You can buy everything you'd find at any typical mall here for reasonable prices.
If you have the chance, take an island trip: a half day or full day to visit from one to four islands. There are a few local shops on each which sell gifts and crafts that are half the price of a shop at the resorts or the airport.
Mafushi is part of the island hopping trip. Prices are much cheaper than at the souvenior shop on the main island and the airport. Bargaining is expected, and there's no need to visit all the shops because most of them sell pretty much the same things.
Sun Island has a jewelry shop with hand made rings, necklaces and bracelets. They're expensive, nothing under $100, but a good place to find a unique birthday gift or something. The stones are of good quality, and they even sell loose gemstones, packaged in a little gift box. Worth a look.
