Tower of London

Much of the history that shaped the United Kingdom happened here at the Tower of London, which also houses an exhibit on the Crown Jewels. Check out the Yeoman Warder guided tour, which is free with admission, to learn the gruesome history behind the tower, which once served as Anne Boleyn’s prison. The tours are entertaining, educational, and surprisingly personal. The tower is among the most visited attractions in the United Kingdom.

Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey is among the most famous of England’s cathedrals. It is known for its amazing architecture and hundreds of years of history including monarch coronations and weddings. This is also the grave site of famous Britons like Charles Dickens and Charles Darwin. Paid tours are available with audio devices. While you’re here, check out the House of Parliament and Big Ben, which are located nearby.

British Museum

The British Museum is so large that you could probably spend a whole day here and still not see everything. The most popular exhibits include the Rosetta Stone, Elgin Marbles, and Lewis Chessmen. The expansive museum covers several floors and a variety of Egyptian antiquities.

Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace is a grand place to visit with over 700 womens, 19 of which are open to the public. Show up early if you intend to tour the palace or watch the changing of the guards.

South Bank

South Bank is a neighborhood offers a collection of bars, restaurants, and other attractions that keep visitors coming back. In December and January, South Bank also hosts a Christmas market with sausages, mulled wine, holiday gifts, and more. Follow the Queen’s Walk along the Thames toward Tower Bridge from the London Eye. Along the way, you will pass many theatres and the Tate Modern museum.
