Touring around Lake Superior is an awesome trip, especially on a motorcycle. Doing it in five days and trying to see most of the sites was a challenge. Our group of 28 people and 17 motorcycles started out in Duluth, MN. Day one took us on back roads America on the south side of Lake Superior, winding through Porcupine Mountains, enjoying rustic countryside views, and ending in Houghton, MI. Lovely stay at the Super 8 in Houghton along the riverbank was a relaxing end to day one.
Next day we were off to the tip of the penisula, Copper Harbor. Riding through breathtaking forests and winding roads with canopies of trees was like a thrill ride on a bike. Other roads took us on winding roads and ‘tickle belly’ hills as we could catch glimpes of the lake. There are many rest stops along the way to walk along the beach and test the water, (a friend and I HAD to dip our feet in the lake of course). Brockway Mtn Drive is like a roller coaster ride that takes you to the top for an overlook of the lake. We stopped at other interesting places along the way, such as Gay, MI and the Gay Bar. Munising, MI was the end of this days journey. Topped off the evening with a sunset cruise to Pictured Rocks before our stay at Munising Days Inn.
Day 3 was just as scenic as we stopped at Tahquawenon Falls; rode the Curly Lewis Memorial Hwy; stopped at Soo locks; crossed the international bridge; and on to WaWa, Ont. Our destination that night was the Bristol Motel. Day 4 was a rainy day, but onward we rode, to Rainbow Falls, Maranthon, and Boswell Point. Nipigon, Ont. was the end of that day’s ride staying at the Beaver Motel, a super place to stay I must add.
Day 5, well, cold (43F) and very foggy. Not the best weather to be riding in but we ride rain or shine. Again, with breathtaking views of the lake along the way, we made our way to Thunder Bay. Of course a stop at the Harley Davidson dealer was a MUST. Then on to Kakabeka Falls, Split Rock light house, and Gooseberry Falls. We ended back in Duluth. Many sights to see there alone, but that will have to be on another trip review. I was so glad I made this trip, meeting new friends and seeing new places. I would definitely do it again.
