A two-time host of the Winter Olympics, Lake Placid in New York is an outdoor paradise for children of all ages. While many of the activities within the city are centered around the Olympics, Lake Placid has more to offer than just opportunities for vicarious Olympic Glory. Activities within the area are most easily categorized into three groups: Olympicss-related activities, outdoor activities, and other points of interest.  Here are the best things to do in Lake Placid.

Olympic-Related Activities

The lionshare of activities in and around Lake Placid reflect the area’s history as a two-time host of the Winter Olympics. The Olympic Jumping Complex is located just outside of Lake Placid and is available for tours during the summer months. Both an elevator and a chair lift are available for one’s journey to the top of the jump.

For Olympic history buffs, the original torch from the 1980 Winter Games is still visible at the Lake Placid Horse Show Grounds. Not to be outdone, and not to be missed, the Olympic Village from the 1980 Lake Placid games features five blocks of charming pubs, shops, and restaurants. Within the Olympic Village area are three ice surfaces, the Lake Placid Olympic Museum, and the Lake Placid Conference Center.

Additional Olympic-related activities in and around Lake Placid include the aforementioned Olympic Ice Center, which provides visitors the opportunity to relive the 1980 Miracle on Ice, in which the United States defeated the U.S.S.R in Hockey; and the Olympic Sports Center Bobsled Track, in which visitors can experience wooshing down the Bobsled Track used in the 1980 games, at a high speed.

Outdoor Activities

For those who prefer nature’s wonders to the Olympics, there are a multitude of ways to enjoy the great outdoors in and around Lake Placid. The Wild Center is one of the best places in the area to explore nature. Featuring 31 Acres and a variety of hands-on activities for young and old alike, The Wild Center is a fun and educational opportunity for the entire family.

The White Pines Camp served as the summer Whitehouse for President Herbert Hoover and features 20 building on 35 acres. Various walking trails, including the woodland and likewise trails, are not to be missed.

Additional points of interest in and around Lake Placid include the Wine Tasting Train, in which wine from the Swedish Hill and Goose Watch Wineries can be sampled; and the Adirondack Museum, which provides a history lesson of the area’s last 200 years.
