How to Get There
If you are driving, Lagos can be reached by the highway from Spain or Lisbon. If not, Lagos is well-connected with buses from all the major towns in Portugal and the Algarve. If you prefer a taxi, you can get one at the train station and they’ll bring you anyway in Lagos you want to go. However, the best transport once you get to Lagos is your feet! It’s great to stroll along the small houses, shops and restaurants.

How about taking a stroll down Lagos’ streets to go shopping and soak up the local atmosphere. But if you want to immerse yourself in Lagos’ rich history, go visit:
- Forte da Ponta da Bandeira – A small military fortress built between 1680 and 1690 to defend Lagos from attack.
- Mercado de Escravos – Built in 1444, this is where Europe’s first slave markets were held.
- Old city walls – These defensive walls and bastions are still intact and are said to date back to the 1500s. Some believe it’s possible these wall lines also represent boundaries from earlier eras, perhaps Medieval or Roman.
- Churches – Igreja de Santo Antonio and Igreja de Santa Maria.
If you go down to the marina at Lagos there is a road train that will take you to the Grotto cave area and you can get off at various points. Also, there are small boats you can take to go visit the sandy beaches enclosed by red rock formations to the famous Punta de Piedade, the Southern edge of Lagos and the Algarve.
