Head to Bako National Park, Semenggoh Orang Utan Center, Kubah National Park, or the Cat Museum by city bus. The bus fare is cheap and you just need to know the schedule in advance. Bus timetables can be found at the Tourist Information Center near the waterfront. A visit to Kuching can be managed completely on foot and local bus.
Taxis are another great way to get around the city, but here’s a tip from the locals: the red taxis are cheaper than the blue ones if you’re looking to cut costs. Of course you may find the blue taxis are newer and bigger and more comfortable compared to the red taxis.
Once in awhile you may receive an offer from a local to drive you someplace for the same fare as a bus ride. Some visitors to Kuching said they have taken a van from Kubah National Park to city and paid RM4 person for the ride. This saved a lot of time that would have been spent waiting for the bus.
Kuching City is largely on the south side of the Sarawak River, but there are plenty of places to visit on the north side, and some within walking distance of the shore line. Many travelers follow the example of the locals and catch a public ferry across the river. For a few ringgits you will be on the other side in minutes. There are several crossing points along the waterfront and crossings are frequent.
You can also catch an express boat from Kuching to Sibu. Start at the Express ferry terminal which is located at Pending, about six to seven kilometers from the city center. You can taxi there for around RM20. Boats leave at 8:30 a.m. and the trip takes about five hours. You’ll pass by some heavy industry along the Sarawak River before you head across the South China sea to the mouth of the Rejang River. On the way up the Rejang you’ll pass many logging ports and saw mills, plus you’ll see piles of logs along the banks, and barges pulling piles of logs along the river. One visitor said they paid about RM45 for the boat trip.
