Khartoum Shopping
A mix of modern malls, street vendors, and traditional souks, make shopping in Khartoum a unique experience.
Shops and Malls
Along with plenty of shopping, the Afra Mall has a bowling alley, a movie theater, and a Turkish restaurant. It doesn’t compare to malls in Europe or the Gulf, but it does provide one-stop shopping for locals and tourists. Home Care, the most exclusive shop in Khartoum, sells electronic equipment, decorations, gifts, textiles, kitchen items, and pretty much everything for the home. The small and expensive Fantasia Book Store may be the only place in Khartoum where you can buy an accurate map of the area. Small vendors of every type line most streets in Khartoum. Many sell fruits and vegetables, as well as items for the home, and souvenirs. Shop around for the best prices, and always bargain.
Souks
See how the locals shop with a visit to Suq el Merkhazi. Vendors sell fruits, vegetables, and a variety of meats. Prices are much lower than grocery stores in town. You’ll see a colorful and fascinating mix of ethnic groups. For authentic souvenirs try Souk Omdurman. A variety of shops offer local crafts such as ebony wood animal carvings, shoes made of animal skin, and baby alligator ashtrays. Situated on the outskirts of Amarat, the Souq el-Shabbi offers shoppers the cleanest and most organized buying experience. You can expect to pay about half on shoes and clothes, as opposed to the stores in town.
