Kawah Ijen Transportation

Tourists from around the world travel each year to see the volcano and crater lake at Kawah Ijen, Indonesia. There are a variety of transportation options to get you there, allowing you to travel by plane, bus, or car.

Travel by Plane

Flights are available from Malaysia, Singapore, Jakarta, and Bali, landing at Surabaya Juanda airport. From there, take a second flight to Banyuwangi Blimbingsari airport. If traveling to Kawah Ijen from Bali, you can fly direct.

Traveling with a Tour Group

From the town of Banyuwangi there are tours available that will take you directly from your hotel to see the famed Ijen crater. You’ll be transported by minivan, traveling about 30 kilometers to a base camp called Paltuding to begin your tour.

Traveling by Bus

There are a variety of affordable and convenient options to reach Kawah Ijen by bus. Buses run daily, some as frequently as every 30 minutes, while others only run every 11 to 12 hours. Buses originate in Bondowoso, Banyuwangi, Jember, Denpasar, Banyuwangi, and Malang. Check schedules and fares in advance to make sure any route you choose will align with your travel plans.

Traveling by Car

If you choose to drive your own car or motorbike to Kawah Ijen know that the main road begins in the town of Bondowoso, but it is possible to reach Ijen from Banyuwangi. When making the trip from Banyuwangi, when you reach the plateau, be sure to look to the left to see the Raung volcano. It is the highest mountain of the Ijen range, and is still an active volcano.
