Local Customs in Kataragama, Sri Lanka

The Purga is a Hindu custom where vendors offer you a variety of foods. If you are unsure of what to do, your driver can help explain the ritual. If you do not have a driver, you can follow the others in the crowd. The food is an offering to the Hindu Priest, who will then take a portion of the food and leave you the rest.

Another custom occurs during the months of July and August where the festivals are held in Kataragama. At this time, you can witness the thousands of people practice voluntary self-mortification to show their devotion to the Gods. Some of the rituals include fasting, praying, and meditating. Before paying homage in the temple, Maha Devale, the worshippers bathe in the nearby river. You can also see the fire-walking event. The devoted walk barefoot over a large bed of hot coals.
