Shopping for Tea 

Kandy is not a province famous for tea, but due to its very central location, Kandy shopping can be a wonderful experience since every tea known in Sri Lanka is fresh from the farm and accessible at local prices. The assortment of farm fresh herbs and teas is without parallel.

If you’re traveling in late July or early August, make time to check out Esala Perahera, a 10-day festival centering around the decorating of 50 elephants. Book accommodations far in advance as the area fills up fast and early.

Clothes, Nicknacks, Food at the Temple of the Tooth

The best area to shop for most things, from day-to-day needs to souvenirs, is Temple Street, just North of the Temple of the Tooth. The Temple of the Tooth is a must-see while shopping in this area. It can be a wonderful starting point or a good place for a midday break. Expect internet cafes, bakeries, bookstores, and sweet shops. You’ll also find Batik factories in this area with storefronts attached to each establishment. It’s a good place to watch the batik-making process from beginning to end.
