Being the capital of Alaska, there is tons of shopping in Juneau, but where to start is the question. Depending on what you are looking for there are clothing stores, tourist shops, smoke shops, and more.
Taku Smokeries & Gift Shops
When you travel to Alaska, you have to try the salmon. Salmon in Juneau is delightful and can be purchased in gift stores. The salmon is packaged and served at every restaurant. The Taku Smokery store will let you taste the Juneau-caught salmon before you purchase. They also have many other seafood products such as hot-smoked & cold-smoked salmon, crab, spot prawns, caviar, salmon jerky, and more.
Some of the gift shops carry nicely painted Matryoshka dolls, miniature boxes, hand carved Christmas figurines, and even Russian religious icons. The more detailed the gift is, the more expensive it will be. Amber jewelry is becoming more popular for tourists. The Juneau Wharf offers more tourist gifts such as T-shirts, postcards, and assortments of souvenirs. Ben Franklin’s gift shop is also a great place to shop because it is less usual items and more of a craft store. Note that the end of the season brings in better prices also.
Native American Hand Crafts
The Mount Juneau Trading Post is a great place to find Native American craft items. The store is actually owned by a Native Family and a percentage of the proceeds from the sales go to the artists themselves. The shop has leather goods that are made from caribou hides, wooden and bone carvings, beads, masks, and things made from whale bones and narwhal tusks. They even have jewelry made from mammoth ivory.
