Italian Trains

Author: Herb Brennen
Date of Trip: April 2010

We have used the regional trains in Italy on several occasions and never had a bad experience. In Naples it is a long walk from the docks and if you are using the regional train you buy tickets at the smoke shop. We stood that day on our way to Sorrento and chatted away the twenty-five minutes with other tourists. On the way back we stopped at Pompeii and got a seat. Yes their windows are often filthy and you can’t take any pictures. But you cant beat the price from the port of Civitavecchia to Rome and back. We used it from Montecatini to Siena via Florence as well we went in the other direction from Montecatini to cinque terre and back. Sometimes it was a little crowded but never a problem. They are on time, except when they go on strike, however they publish those dates. Best to take the second last train than the last train, as it easier on the nerves.
