Is a romance package worth the price?

Romantic getaways are supposed to be relaxing and stress-free. But for many people, planning that weekend trip is anything but. There’s just so much to do: coordinating dinners, flowers, and romantic touches; finding a hotel that will pamper you and your sweetie; and, once booked, ensuring everything goes off without a hitch.

Thankfully, many hotels now put together packages that do everything for you—Champagne, chocolates, massages, and more. One phone call and you’re done, right? Not so fast. While you may save time by booking a romance package, you may also end up paying more than you should.

Consider the “Romance Package” at the Hilton Chicago. Available for $299 (when I checked), it includes early check-in, sparkling wine or cider, fitness center access, breakfast, and a late checkout upon request. If you stay an extra night, you can get two-for-one entrees at the hotel restaurant. This package cost $100 more than standard room rates—a bit steep for wine, breakfast, and check-in/out perks.

The “Romance Package” at the Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate, on the other hand, is a better value. It includes breakfast for two, Champagne, chocolate-covered strawberries, turndown service, and a late checkout. When I checked prices, the package cost $279, or $40 more than standard room rates ($239). Considering the value of the package’s perks, this works out to be a good deal.

In short: While doing some legwork may take time, you won’t get conned into an overpriced “deal.” Compare prices between the package and standard room rates, and see if the difference is a good value for your budget.
