A Testament to Bravery

This memorial was built to honor the more than 90,000 Indians who were killed in World War I and the Afghan War. The famous arch stands at 137 feet, and it’s a place that is admired by visitors and locals alike. India Gate was built in the 1930s, and includes a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and an eternal flame. The National Guard wears ceremonial clothes, and it’s a colorful procedure to watch how they protect the tomb and change out the guards. At night, the whole gate is lit up by floodlights. Vendors sell snacks here and families will come to picnic.

Canopy at India Gate

There was once a statue of King George V that sits atop a canopy that was built close to India Gate. They were both constructed around the same time period. It’s a gazebo structure that was meant to signify Britain’s rule over India, but when the British lost their influence, they took down the statue. It’s worth seeing while you’re here to learn more about the history, the architecture and the will of the people during the past and now.
