Huntsville, Home To Sam Houston
You know that you have arrived in Huntsville when you drive past a giant statue of Sam Houston, the political figure who was at the center of Texas’ early years. The statue was erected along Interstate 45 as a tribute to one of Texas’ major heroes. There is a picnic area and a rest stop next to the statue, which also serves as the Huntsville Visitors Center.
Once inside Huntsville, you will find the Sam Houston Memorial Museum. Here you can tour the property, learn about the larger-than-life Sam Houston, and visit a pretty lake by one of the old buildings. The must-see attraction at the museum is the Steamboat House, where Sam Houston died in 1863.
