Hanoi – What to Pack- Clothing and Supplies Tips

Hanoi What to Pack

Knowing what to pack when visiting Hanoi will help you get the most out of your stay.

Luggage

Take a suitcase for essentials and pack lightly, leaving plenty of room for souvenirs. You’ll be able to find most of what you need in Hanoi. Bring a light backpack for day trips. Pacsafe options are ideal for keeping your stuff secure when traveling by train.

Clothing

In wintertime, especially January and February, bring a warm coat and pullover. Temperatures range from 8-15°C (47-59°F). There are almost no heaters anywhere- indoor and outdoor temperatures are nearly identical.

Pack comfortable shoes. In winter (November-February), don’t wear heavy boots. Bring light hiking shoes instead. Make sure you have plenty of socks. If you’re used to an exceptionally humid climate, take lip balm.

Summer clothes and sandals or shoes are best for the warmer months. You’ll need rain gear year-round.

Clothes to Pack

Cameras and Converters

Bring a camera and enough memory cards to store your photos. Hotel computers probably won’t have programs for downloading them. Bring a world traveler power converter to charge electronics.

Electronics to Pack

Money

US dollars are widely accepted here. Banks give better exchange rates for larger bills ($50 and $100). Bring credit cards, too. Save some cash for the airport tax when you depart.

Toiletries and Medications

Unless it’s something highly-specific, purchase items in Hanoi instead of packing them, since it’s cheaper there. They have stores like 7-11 that sell everything.

Cellphone

Bring your mobile phone for extended stays and purchase a SIM chip and pre-paid phone cards for Tri-band GSM phones. You can use T-Mobile here, but it’s expensive.
