The ancient city of Hanoi is a city that draws on the modern as well. Head out at night to see authentic Vietnamese performances and enjoy the local cuisine. From water puppets to Vietnamese beer to performances by the lake, Hanoi comes alive at night.
Water Puppet Theater
Water puppets have been a feature of Vietnamese life for centuries. Head to a local theater to see the puppets in action as they recount tales of Vietnamese legends and contemporary stories. Shows are given every night. This is a great place to go with the kids. Book early so you can have seats close to the action.
Ta Hien and Da Liet Streets
One of Hanoi’s major thoroughfares, Ta Hien street is a pedestrian-only street at night. Come here then to mingle with locals and then grab a varied meal. Street venders are interspersed with restaurants offering cheap meals and cold tea. Another place to head is to Da Liet street. This is also where you can enjoy lots of beers. Many cafes offer a huge selection of local Asian beers, often brewed right on the premises.
Hoan Kiem Lake
From Friday to Sunday, the streets around the lake are closed off to car traffic. Nighttime makes the perfect time to see this magical lake. The areas around the lake are lit up with lanterns. This is when street performers come out to show off their skills. Wander around the streets by the late and watch as Vietnamese dangers and singers show off their carefully-honed abilities. This is a great place to see up-and-coming performers and classic Vietnamese arts in the same place.
