Greystone B&B, Calais, Maine

Author: Kathy Wingate
Date of Trip: September 2007

My traveling companion and I chose the Greystone, partly because of reviews found on Travel Advisor. It was a great choice! Candy and Alan are so helpful, and down to earth, they have created a warm and inviting atmosphere in their lovely home. Our rooms were upstairs with a shared bathroom, comfortable beds, plenty of space. Satellite TV in one room, and WIFI available. Candy’s breakfasts were wonderful! We were there for 3 nights, so got to sample those wonderful blueberry pancakes, as well as some other great treats. The rates were very reasonable, and we got a discount for staying several nights.

Our plan was to make day trips to several locations, including Campobello Island, NB, and the Roosevelt Cottage there, St. Andrews, NB, and possibly St. John, which we didn’t make. We did spend part of a day in Eastport, Maine, and visited the lighthouse there, also ate at the Chowder House, which had wonderful fresh lobster, reasonably priced.

Candy suggested we visit Kingsbrae Gardens in St. Andrews, NB, and it was lovely. We had afternoon tea at the restaurant, which was delicious. If you go to the gardens, be sure to visit the restaurant.

Their B&B is just more than a stone’s throw from the bridge going into Canada, which is nice if you plan day trips. Expect the rules to change in regards to crossing the border after Jan. 1, 2008, so be sure you know what you need, before you go. Candy was very helpful, there.

Note that, for some reason, my cell phone was picking up Canadian time in Calais, which is 1 hour ahead of our time, and I had some confusion when I tried to use my cell phone for an alarm clock. Also got strange messages when I tried to call home. Use the alarm clock they provide, if your cell is doing the same.

Another hint: If scenic photography is part of your plan, be sure to check the tide tables, and plan to go when the high tide is at a good time of day for photographs. Low tide around the Bay of Fundy, means a lot of muddy shoreline.
