Norway in a Nutshell

Fjord Tours offers a tried and tested route between Oslo and Bergen. You could orchestrate the trip on your own route but it involves catching 3 trains, a boat and a bus so there is quite a bit of planning. Fjord Tours company will take care of the all the components of the tour for as a premium service. This is an unguided tour and once you get the tickets you’re on your own, but if you encounter a problem Fjord Tours will help.

Bus

Buses are cheap, but not as scenic and you spend a lot of time in tunnels.

Cars

Renting a car gives you the most flexibility, allowing you to come and go as you please.

Fjords

You can travel to and from Flam by boat or ferry and floating the fjords is a beautiful way to travel. There’s a boat service all the way to Bergen, which takes about 5 hours as you travel out of the Songefjorden and between small islands. The boats from Gudvangern are passenger only and don’t ferry cars.

Railway

Trains are a popular and scenic way to travel. The trains can get busy, so it’s good to be organized beforehand so you don’t get stuck waiting for too long. The timetables are in plain view and the trains will be marked as full if they are. The NSB runs the train from Oslo to Myrdal. The Flambana from Myrdal to Flam is owned by a private company and is one of the most popular for scenic tours.

Downhill Biking

For the sportier traveler you can bring a bike with you by train and roll from Myrdal or Finse to Flan. Contact the Finse 1222 to make sure the trail conditions are suitable. If you take the trail you’re in for spectacular views of farmland, rivers, waterfalls and mountains. Don’t watch the scenery more than the trail though, as conditions can be rough.
