The European Union (EU) just launched a consumer protections website that lists the rights of a passenger in a number of typical travel-related scenarios. The site is very plain, clear, and the rules and protections are written in simple, direct text.
Which is to say it’s pretty much perfect.
One of the main obstacles facing airline customers these days is the lack of clarity surrounding their rights. The DOT, too, has a site outlining consumer rights and rules here in the States, but with all due respect, the DOT site is long and rather unwieldy.
The EU site, on the other hand, puts passengers’ rights easily within reach, meaning customers can quickly and easily determine their options in a given situation. When you’re on the go, clarity is key, and the EU site makes it easy to find the information you need in just a few clicks.
The website also lists consumer rights for rail travel, and says it will list traveler rights for water and bus travel once the EU approves proposed sets of rules for those modes of transport.
Travelers heading to Europe should definitely check out the new site before leaving, as European rules can vary quite a bit from those here in the U.S. It might not be a bad idea to bookmark the site on your smartphone, either (but beware those international data roaming charges).
