Düsseldorf Things to Do
Düsseldorf is a city with one foot in the modern world and another in the past.
Modern Places
This is a city that is thriving and constantly changing. One of the biggest changes can be seen here in Medienhafen area where there are several contemporary buildings created by Frank Gehry, one of the pioneers of the modern style of architecture. Jutting out at odd angles, the buildings are covered in shiny material to reflect sunlight. Another modern place is the Film Museum with several exhibits devoted to the world of contemporary cinema. The Aquazoo – Löbbecke Museum is dedicated to helping people understand contemporary advances in biology. Here you can find a tropical rainforest along with a butterfly garden. You can also see lots of fish, alligators, and otters. This is a great treat for small children.
Older Spaces
Those in search of history here won’t have to go far to turn to find it. Stroll the streets of the Old Town to learn all you need to know about Düsseldorf’s history. Peek at the Neanderkirche, the Bergerkirche,St Lambertus and the Johanneskirche. These four churches have defined the city for centuries. The Heine House is dedicated to the works of the famous author who was born here and the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen is a museum with art collections that span centuries. For more history, visit the Benrath Palace. It is at the Schloss Benrath and offers several museums including one devoted to European gardening. The spacious grounds make an ideal place to enjoy a warm spring day. When you get hungry, visit the Carlsplatz food market. Open every day but Sunday, this is a wonderful place to sample the local cuisine from native cooks.
