Driving in Sedona and Other Warnings and Dangers

Warnings and Dangers in Sedona Driving

If you are new to Sedona, you might find driving at night difficult due to the limited light available throughout the city. Due to Lowell Observatory in nearby Flagstaff, less lighting is used throughout the city of Sedona, making it more challenging for tourists and newcomers of the town. Noticing street names and address numbers is at times nearly impossible at night.

The highways surrounding Sedona have also proven difficult to those who are not familiar with the area. Avoid taking the main highways in Sedona if you have trouble seeing at night or if you are unused to the terrain. The beauty of Sedona can be another challenge to drivers. To be safe, enjoy the views while traveling the highway in Sedona, but avoid getting too distracted.

Be Mindful of Speed Traps and Changes

Beware of speed limit signs at all times, as speed limits change quickly around the city. Whenever you are stopped at a gas station or a local restaurant in Sedona, ask locals about various speed traps.

Sedona has also implemented round-abouts for drivers through busy areas of the city. Learn how to properly navigate round-abouts to avoid potential accidents or holding up traffic.

Traveling Off Road

While many tourists in Sedona enjoy the idea of off-road traveling, it is strictly prohibited in and around Sedona. Instead, if you are interested in driving off-road, consider calling the Arizona Lands Information Center or reaching out to the Arizona State Parks OHV program coordinator. The National Forest and Wildlife works to keep nature intact, and are more than willing to ticket drivers off-roading illegally.
