When To Go

When the weather mellows and the leaves turn from lush green to vibrant orange, tourists rush to New Hampshire to catch a glimpse of the colorful countryside. The state also offers endless outdoor activity options throughout the year. With the possibility of an occasional snowstorm in the spring, and a fall that lasts into December, the weather keeps things interesting.

high season: lateMay to early-September, earlyOctober to mid--October
low season: December to March
shoulder season: mid-September to September, lateOctober to November, April to mid--May

Weather Information

Summer is typically warmer inland, with temperatures reaching up to 90 degrees, while the coastal regions are kept cool by the ocean breeze. Fall brings the changing of the leaves and a drop in temperature. The arrival of winter is signaled by snow in the White Mountains Region. While coastal temperatures remain the most temperate in the state, snow and ice cover all areas in January. Warmer temperatures in spring melt away the chill of winter.

Crowd Information

Holidays and three-day weekends are prime vacation time for tourists. Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day draw the largest crowds during the summer; while Christmas, New Year's Eve, and President's Day attract skiers in winter.

Closure Information

Beach destinations, such as Hampton Beach, stay open during the off-season. However, certain stores close due to the lull in tourism. The ski resorts stay open all year and offer hiking and other outdoor activities during the summer.

When to Save

The most affordable months to travel are April, May, and late-September. No sales tax in the state adds another way to save a little extra cash.

When to Book

Summer rentals should be reserved at least six months to a year in advance. All other bookings should be made a few weeks prior to the desired travel time.
