Delta’s DineUp Meals: Worth It?

How many ways can the airlines pick your pocket? The sky, it would seem, is the limit.

The latest, from Delta: upgraded meals for coach-class flyers.

So-called DineUp meals are now on offer on Delta transcon flights between New York and Los Angeles or San Francisco.

Highlights:

  • DineUp meals must be pre-ordered at least 48 hours before the flight’s departure.
  • The premium meals will be served at the same time as the flight’s regular meal service.
  • Prices range from $11.99 to $15.99.
  • Flyers who charge DineUp meals to a Delta SkyMiles credit card get a 20 percent discount.

What’s on the menu? Delta shows several sample DineUp meals on its website, including an “antipasto entree of beef tenderloin and grilled rosemary shrimp,” described thusly:

Flavorful trio starts with thinly sliced salami, peppers, wedges of smoked Gouda and brie cheeses, fresh strawberries and red grapes. Alongside sliced seared beef tenderloin, with roasted bell peppers and cippolini onions, and grilled rosemary shrimp with fresh jicama slaw. Creamy horseradish sauce on the side. Served chilled.

Nice. A bit pricey, sure. But I’d be happy to pay more for what appears to be a tasty, fresh, healthy meal.

Perhaps Delta has finally hit upon an extra-fee service that travelers will relish, not revile.
