Calling it a walk or a stroll in the park would definitely be understating it, but Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest walkable mountain in the world. To reach the very top, Uhuru Peak, you’ll need five or six nights, good physical condition, experienced guides, determination, and luck, but you won’t need climbing ropes. Don’t underestimate the climb, though—multiple people die attempting the trek up the mountain every year. And of the thousands who attempt the hike every year, only around 30 percent actually reach the summit. Those who do need to be prepared to face altitude sickness and low temperature on the body.
Not sold on a climb to the top? There’s plenty to see on the ground in Kilimanjaro National Park, as it’s more than just a launching point for the climb. The UNESCO-designated World Heritage area features a number of different climates, and you can walk through everything from tropical rainforests to desert regions.
Where is it? Tanzania, Africa.
Where to stay? At the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro, in the Ameg Lodge. This eco-friendly hotel was constructed using local building materials, and features deluxe rooms, all with private verandahs.
What else should I know? Be prepared to shell out serious cash to come here. Entering the National Park alone costs $60, and a summit to the top can cost close to $1,000.
Who’s it for? Serious hikers, fitness buffs, adventurers.
