With 75-miles of beach, Fraser Island is officially the world’s largest sand island. Long stretches of white sand beaches boarder clean water, and make the island a perfect warm-weather vacation spot.
This UNESCO World Heritage site has many more attractions than just beaches, though. It’s the only place in the world where a tall rainforest can be found atop sand dunes. Head deep into the forests for rare wildlife-watching (there are over 230 species of birds on the island).
Take a whale-watching tour around the island, swim or snorkel in the ocean, walk along the brilliantly colored sand beaches, swim in one of the numerous freshwater lakes, or explore the sand cliffs—you’ll never run out of things to do on this island!
Where is it? Off the east coast of Australia. The closest major international airport is Brisbane (check prices).
Where to stay? In Australia’s best beach resort (as voted by Discovery’s Travel Channel), Kingfisher Bay Resort.
What else should I know? The island is a popular tourist destination and can get busy during school holidays.
Who’s it for? Sunbathers, sandcastle builders, and swimmers.
