Daily Daydream: A Budget Oasis in Belize

Caroline Morse Teel

Belize has a budget-busting reputation for travelers, but Tobacco Caye is an island oasis that can accommodate most backpackers' budgets. A small island—and we mean small: you can walk around the entire island in just 10 minutes. Or, swim a few laps around it!

Tobacco Caye is perfect for relaxing—the small island just has hotels and a dive shop, so you really don't have anything else to do except lounge and explore. Be prepared to walk everywhere, as there are no roads,

Grab a snorkel and head out to the nearby reef, or hire a boat to take you even further out for manatee spotting. Toward the day's end, snag a hammock and watch the sunset.

Where Is it? Fly internationally to Belize City's Philip S.W. Goldson Airport (check rates), and then connect to Dangriga, where you can get a water taxi.

Where to Stay? Accommodation is limited and budget, so don't expect a luxury resort. The simple Tobacco Cay Lodge does the job nicely.

What Else Should I Know? Expect to pay a park fee since Tobacco Caye is within the South Water Caye Marine Reserve.

Who's it For? Budget travelers, snorkelers, castaways.**
